In the fourth round of the 2024 NHL Draft, the Ottawa Senators elected to pick winger Blake Montgomery. In his first (and only) year of OHL hockey, the pace-driving winger scored 50 points in 51 games, while mainly serving in a bottom 6 role. He won the Memorial Cup with the Knights. This year, he made the jump to college hockey. His season has just come to its end as the Wisconsin Badgers were eliminated by the Denver Pioneers in the finals. While his points took a bit of a step back this season, he's emerged as one of Ottawa's top prospects.
At only 20 years old, he has so much time to develop. He played in his first AHL game on Wednesday with the Belleville Senators, and it's fair to say he will start there next season. Montgomery's contract officially begins next season; he will play the remainder of this season on an amateur tryout with the BSens.
Montgomery's potential in the NHL is an interesting conversation to be had. His ceiling is not yet known, and while he could be a difference maker for the Sens, he still has a way to go before making the NHL on a full time basis. The BSens will not qualify for the playoffs this season, but that could change next year.B
