Senators should make a bold move for Patrik Laine

The Ottawa Senators have had an eventful offseason. Most notably, they traded their former captain, Brady Tkachuk, to the Florida Panthers. They also brought in multiple new players, including William Eklund, Andre Burakovsky, and Samuel Ersson.

Yet, when looking at the Senators' roster, it is clear that they should not be done making moves yet. One of their needs right now is another winger who can put the puck in the net.

When looking at the remaining unrestricted free agents (UFAs), one player the Senators should strongly consider taking a flier on is Patrik Laine.

Laine remains a UFA after appearing in just five games last season for the Montreal Canadiens due to injury. Because of this, he is not in a position to ask for anything more than a one-year, prove-it deal. With the Senators' forward group needing another sniper, Laine is a player they should take a chance on.

Just back during the 2024-25 season with the Canadiens, Laine recorded 20 goals and 33 points in 52 games. He also had 52 points in 55 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022-23. During the season before in 2021-22 with Columbus, he had 26 goals and 56 points in 56 games. With past numbers like these, the Senators should not be afraid to sign him to a one-year deal.

Where Laine could fit in the Senators' lineup

If the Senators signed Laine, he could slot well on their second line with Dylan Cozens and Drake Batherson. However, he also would have the potential to be a fit on their third line with Shane Pinto and Michael Amadio. In either scenario, Laine could give the Senators' middle six a boost next season if he stayed healthy.

Laine would also be a clear option for the Senators' power play if signed. The 2016 second-overall pick thrives on the man advantage due to his high offensive skill. During the 2024-25 season with Montreal, 15 out of his 20 goals came on the power play.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if Laine ends up being signed by the Senators. There could be a good match here.
