The Ottawa Senators have selected Jonas Lagerberg Hoen with the 25th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
It's not a name that everyone is familiar with, but it's clear that the Senators' scouting staff has identified something in Lagerberg Hoen that was worth taking with the 25th pick. The hope is that, despite the small amount of game action last season, he will be able to overcome the injuries that he dealt with and prove to the fan base why he was drafted.
Senators pick Lagerberg Hoen with pick #25
The 6-foot-2 right-shot winger was tearing through the Swedish junior circuit early in the year with Leksands IF U20, putting up nine goals and 16 points in just nine games. He even got a short look at the SHL level before everything changed in October with a knee injury that ended his season.
There’s a lot to like in the toolkit. He has a heavy shot, especially off the catch, and a one-timer that already looks like it could translate if everything comes back clean. He’s not shy physically either. Plays through contact, goes to the net, and will throw a hit when it’s there. It’s a straightforward, heavy style when he’s on his game.
That’s where the risk comes in. You’re basically betting on the player he was before the injury, which has happened before. One of the most notable would be Matthew Knies of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was drafted in the second round after dealing with an injury, and he turned out to be an elite power forward just a few years into his career.
It’s a swing, no question. However, the Senators' scouting staff must have seen enough to decide that he was the best option to take. If this works out, they look like geniuses; if it doesn't, then the fan base is going to question why Lagerberg Hoen was selected.
