Senators rookies give fans tantalizing view of what’s to come

The Ottawa Senators prospect group hit the ice last night in the first game of the club’s rookie tournament. The Sens took a 4-3 win in overtime over the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect squad.

And, well, let’s just say that the Senators gave their fans a tantalizing look at what’s to come.

The most evident highlight was Jaxson Cover’s coast-to-coast OT game-winner. As my colleague Alicia Racine noted, Cover’s journey has culminated in one heck of a debut.

Here’s a look at the beauty of a winner.

Cover’s goal was just the tip of the iceberg. The first-rounder from 2026 showed why the Senators were smart to take him with the 32nd-overall pick.

But there was one other prospect that turned some heads. We’re talking about Kasper Halttunen. The 21-year-old scored the wicked tally.

The goal makes it clear why the Senators got him as part of the William Eklund deal. The 6’4”, 205-pound winger looks fantastic in a Senators’ jersey. And while he may have sort of fallen through the cracks of the Eklund deal, it looks like the Senators will be happy they landed Eklund and Halttunen for that ninth-overall pick.

So, with Cover and Halttunen looking good, Senators fans have plenty to look forward to as the organization’s prospect pipeline looks pretty robust.

Cover, Halttunen may take pressure off Senators to re-sign Batherson

There’s another interesting layer of subtext to this impressive showing on Saturday. Having guys like Cover and Halttunen thrive could very well take the pressure off the Senators in the Drake Batherson contract saga.

Since the Sens have solid, up-and-coming players, all of a sudden, the Senators might not be in such a hurry to pay through the nose for Batherson.

Make no mistake. Losing Batherson won’t be easy. But it wouldn’t be nearly as devastating to see Batherson leave now that such talented young players are on the rise.

Of course, this assessment doesn’t mean that the Senators shouldn’t try to sign Batherson. The organization should definitely do everything it can to keep Batherson.

But having these guys coming up through the system makes one thing clear: The Senators have more leverage than most think in dealing with Batherson.

And if push comes to shove, the Senators can seriously explore trading Batherson. With promising internal solutions, the Senators can afford to think outside the box. The organization can better allocate its resources instead of putting all of its eggs in a single basket.

That’s why Saturday’s game, as seemingly insignificant as it may be, represents so much more than most fans may believe.
