According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen, the Ottawa Senators are showing interest in Vancouver Canucks winger Jake DeBrusk.

The Senators are believed to be looking for a top-six forward, a top-four right-shot defenceman, and a backup goaltender. So, their interest in Debrusk, who wouldn’t cost a ton to acquire, isn’t surprising.

Would DeBrusk fit with the Senators?

The 29-year-old reached the 20-goal mark again last season with 23 goals, and that's become a pretty common theme throughout his career. He may not be the biggest name available, but he usually finds a way to produce.

Ottawa already has its core pieces in place with players like Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, and Drake Batherson. The Senators wouldn't be bringing in DeBrusk to be anything more than a secondary scorer. Someone who can play in their middle six and score 20-25 goals.

As for his current situation, the Canucks appear to be heading into a full rebuild. And it has been reported that he's not interested in sticking around for the entire thing. Because of that, there has been growing speculation that Vancouver could be willing to listen on him.

DeBrusk has five years left at a $5.5 million cap hit, which isn't a major problem for Ottawa given its cap situation. The bigger obstacle is his no-movement clause. He controls where he goes, at least for now, so any deal would require him to buy into what the Senators are building.

If he wants to play in the playoffs again, then he could jump at the chance to join the Senators. They are likely going to be a playoff contender for the next number of seasons. If he does join, his role would be similar to what it was during his time with the Boston Bruins.

Whether that happens remains to be seen. But from Ottawa's side, the interest makes sense. They're looking for help in the top six; DeBrusk is a proven scorer, and Vancouver appears willing to consider different options. As the 2026 NHL Draft gets closer, it's definitely a situation worth keeping an eye on.
