The Ottawa Senators are entering the offseason with some clear roster needs to address. It is apparent that the Senators need to make some upgrades if they hope to be more of a legitimate threat next season.
The Senators' biggest objective this summer should be to improve the right side of their defense. It is clear that this is currently the weakest part of their roster, so it would not be surprising if they brought in at least one right-shot defenseman before next season.
When looking at the defensemen who could become free agents on July 1, there is no question that Tampa Bay Lightning blueliner Darren Raddysh stands out as a prime potential target for the Senators.
If the Senators signed Raddysh in free agency, he would immediately become one of their top offensive defensemen. His stats this season with the Lightning effectively show this, as he set career highs with 22 goals, 48 assists, and 70 points in 73 games. This kind of offense would be huge for the Senators to add to their blueline, so it would make sense if they pursued Raddysh this offseason.
Raddysh would be perfect fit in Senators' top four
If the Senators signed Raddysh, he could slot nicely on their second pairing with Thomas Chabot. He would also give Ottawa another high-impact option for their power play due to his offensive skills. Keep in mind, this is a defenseman who had 10 power-play goals and 26 power-play points this season with the Bolts.
Given the kind of season that Raddysh just had for the Lightning, it is likely that he would have plenty of suitors if he decided to test the market. Due to this, the Senators would have competition to try to sign him if they targeted him. However, 70-point defensemen do not hit free agency often, so the Senators would be wise to try to land him regardless. Let's see if they can do just that.
