Ottawa Senators hope their hometown club makes a return to the postseason in 2026-27. But more than just make it back, the expectation is that the Sens can get over the hump and out of the first round for the first time since 2017.
However, the path for the Senators might not be as straightforward as fans would like. We know that it will take about 100 points to lock up a spot. If last season was any indication, it could take over 100 points just to make a wild card berth.
That said, the Sens will have to contend with the toughest division in the NHL. But the situation might not be as dire as it seems at face value.
Last season’s biggest surprise was the Buffalo Sabres. They ended a 14-year playoff drought, and even made it to the second round. But the pressure will be on the Sabres to prove they’re not a flash in the pan.
Second, the Boston Bruins, who claimed the first wild card spot, may show some signs of regression. If they do, that could open up a clearer path.
Hoping the Sabres and Bruins regress is not a viable plan. Sure, it’s worth keeping an eye on those teams. But two clubs could prove to be thorns for the Senators this upcoming season.
Senators will need to be wary of Maple Leafs, Red Wings, Panthers
The Toronto Maple Leafs made major efforts to improve their lineup. If the moves work out for them, Toronto could be looking to claim a playoff spot.
Then, there are the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit could finally manage to turn things around, even with the uncertainty involving their GM situation and the Dylan Larkin trade request.
That said, the Red Wings should be a factor for most of the season.
That still leaves the Florida Panthers as the ultimate question mark. The Cats suffered some substantial losses this offseason, but have managed to make up for them. If their moves work out, the Panthers, Maple Leafs, and Red Wings will all be pushing the Senators for a playoff spot in the Atlantic Division.
That leaves, of course, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens, two teams that should be good again this upcoming season. There’s little reason to believe the Habs and Bolts won’t be good.
So, there you have it. The path isn’t exactly rosy, but not impossible, either. The Senators will just have to control what they can. That’s win games, and lock up a spot. It sounds simplistic, but that’s what making the playoffs in the NHL boils down to.
Win as many games as you can in October and November, and breathe a little easier down the stretch.
