The Ottawa Senators have added to their forward depth, as they have acquired Andre Burakovsky from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick.

Burakovsky appeared in 75 games during this past season with the Blackhawks, where he recorded 11 goals, 22 assists, and 33 points. However, he notably cooled off down the stretch for Chicago, posting just three goals and 11 points in his final 45 games. This was after he started the campaign on a high note, recording eight goals and 22 points in his first 30 games.

While Burakovsky had a tough finish to the 2025-26 season, he now has a fresh start in front of him with the Senators. He could be a nice addition to their top nine if he bounces back in Ottawa.

When looking at the Senators' current roster, Burakovsky has the potential to be a decent addition to their third line. However, he could also move up the Senators' lineup if he regained his previous form in Ottawa. He could also be a candidate to receive some power play with the Senators.

Senators taking an expensive gamble with the Burakovsky trade

While there is a chance that Burakovsky could make more of an impact next season than he did in 2025-26, there is no question that this trade is an expensive gamble for the Senators. The 31-year-old forward is entering the final season of his five-year, $27.5 million contract, meaning he has a $5.5 million cap hit. That is an expensive cap hit for the Senators to be taking on, especially when they have multiple roster needs to address.

However, the Senators must have confidence that Burakovsky can make an impact for them. It will be interesting to see if this move ends up benefiting Ottawa. If the veteran winger continues to struggle offensively next season, this trade could end up being a real head-scratcher.
