The NHL trade rumours are already starting to heat up following the Ottawa Senators’ early playoff exit, and the latest one involving the Toronto Maple Leafs is definitely a big swing. According to NHL Trade Rumors, the Senators and Maple Leafs could potentially be discussing a blockbuster centred around Carter Yakemchuk and Matthew Knies.

The proposed deal would reportedly see Yakemchuk heading to Toronto in exchange for Knies, which would address pretty clear needs for both teams.

For the Senators, adding a player like Knies would bring a combination of size, skill, and physicality to the top six that they probably still need more of. At 6-foot-3, Knies has already shown he can play a heavy game, win puck battles, and be effective around the net. That feels like the exact type of player Tim Stutzle and Claude Giroux could benefit from playing with.

He also proved during Toronto’s playoff run that he is not afraid to get involved physically or go to the dirty areas offensively. That type of “playoff-style” forward was something Ottawa looked like it was missing at times during the series against the Carolina Hurricanes.

On the other side, moving Yakemchuk would be a pretty significant gamble for Steve Staios and the Senators' front office. Yakemchuk was a high pick for a reason. Right-shot defencemen with offensive upside do not become available very often, and he still projects as a player who could become a major piece of a blue line in the future.

At the same time, Ottawa already has Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot locked in as long-term pieces on the back end. Because of that, the organization could potentially view adding a young power forward to the top six as the bigger priority right now.

There will obviously be fans uncomfortable with the idea of moving a prospect like Yakemchuk to a division rival. That part is understandable. But the Senators are also entering a stage where the focus starts shifting toward maximizing this current core and taking the next step in the playoffs.

If Knies can provide the secondary scoring, physicality, and net-front presence needed to help them get past the first round next season, it is at least the type of trade worth discussing.

Of course, like every rumour this time of year, nothing means much until something actually happens. Still, this is the kind of move that would completely shake up the Battle of Ontario before the 2026-27 season even starts.
