Senators have prime free agent target to consider in Bruins big defender

The Senators should make a push for Bruins defenseman Andrew Peeke if he tests free agency this summer.

After being swept in the first round by the Carolina Hurricanes, the Ottawa Senators should be looking to make some additions this offseason. They have multiple spots on their roster that could use improvement, and one of them is the right side of their blue line.

When looking at this year's pending unrestricted free agents, Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Peeke stands out as an intriguing potential option for the Senators.

While Peeke is not the flashiest of blueliners, he would provide the right side of the Senators with a steady, defensive defenseman with size. This would have the potential to be very good for Ottawa, as it is clear that the Senators need to be better in their own end next season. Signing a shutdown defenseman like Peeke could help with that.

If the Senators signed Peeke, he could be a good fit on their bottom pairing, but also move up the lineup when needed. Furthermore, because of his strong defense-first style of play, he would be an obvious option for the Senators' penalty kill.

Peeke's age also adds to his appeal, as he is just 28 years old. Due to this, he has multiple years left in his prime, so he is a defenseman that the Senators could sign to a multi-year contract without there being much risk.

Yet, with Peeke being a solid part of the Bruins' blueline over each of the last three seasons, it is likely that Boston will try to re-sign him. However, if he does end up hitting the free agent market on July 1, the Senators would be wise to make a serious push for him. They simply need more defensive depth, and the Parkland, Florida, native stands out as a solid option.

In 77 games this season with the Bruins, Peeke recorded five goals, 14 points, 105 hits, and 135 blocks.
