Wednesday night’s 5-1 win over the Florida Panthers could not have worked out any better for the Ottawa Senators. The Sens blew out The Cats in Brady Tkachuk’s return, even getting to the point where Tkachuk ended his night with his usual childish antics.
While everything was perfectly scripted, the night did not come without a concerning episode.
The Linus Ullmark injury in the third period added a sour note to the overall amazing set of circumstances.

Ullmark left at the 3:25 mark of the third after making 18 saves. He was solid, but a seemingly routine play led to what the team called a lower-body injury following the game. The Senators subsequently placed Ullmark on IR on Thursday.
If this is a long-term thing, it could be bad news for the Senators. But according to one expert, Dr. Harjas Grewal, it might not be the end of the world.
The renowned expert believes that it’s just a groin strain for Ullmark. If it’s as simple as that, it could be a matter of a couple of weeks before he sees action again.
Likely a groin strain for Ullmark

Could be as minimal as something that’s day to day or more severe and out multiple weeks, really can’t tell that via video

Now, placing Ullmark on IR is consistent with this situation. The placement means he’ll miss about two weeks at the least, meaning that it’s just the sort of thing that may need a couple of days to heal and then get back into game action.

It’s worth pointing out that placing the Swedish netminder on IR is most an administrative thing, as it allowed the team to call up Jonas Johansson from Belleville.
Senators season could face serous challenge following Linus Ullmark injury
All right, so what if this is a worst-case scenario? What if Ullmark has a serious injury, one that could keep him out of the lineup for several weeks, as Grewal theorized?
That situation could mean a serious challenge for the Senators. The team has played very well to start this season. The club has climbed to the top of the Atlantic Division, with Wednesday night’s win showing why it’s poised to make a serious run this season.
The problem here is that, without Ullmark, the club will have to rely on Johansson and Samuel Ersson to carry the load. Ersson, for his part, hasn’t exactly been ironclad. And that’s precisely what could make this entire situation tough for the Senators to deal with.
Even if Johansson or Ersson can’t carry the load, the only real thing the team can do is just play its best in front of its goalies.
I mean, do the Senators have any other choice?
Unless this is a season-ending injury, the only thing that the club can do is try to weather the storm until Ullmark returns.
Let’s see what happens. Thursday night’s game against the San Jose Sharks will be a good test to see just how well the team can cope without its starting netminder.
