Claude Giroux was the subject of speculation over the last week or so. The veteran forward was reportedly ready to return to the Ottawa Senators before a stunning change of mind led the discussion elsewhere.

Last weekend, Giroux was rumored to be on his way back to the Philadelphia Flyers. But as we’ve seen with the NHL, things can turn on a dime. Reports emerging on Monday night indicate that Giroux has come to his senses and is prepared to return to the Senators.

The financial terms of the deal are yet unknown. The situation is certainly interesting as it seemed that Giroux was locked to return to the Nation’s Capital. However, the flurry of activity this offseason might have prompted the 38-year-old to reconsider his plans to remain in Ottawa.

The weekend NHL news cycle also suggested that Giroux was considering joining the rival Toronto Maple Leafs. However, it seems that after testing the waters, Giroux figured that his best bet was to return to the Senators.

Given how the Sens have just $5 million in cap space at the moment, the deal would have to be either another $2 million contract or potentially something along the lines of a $1 million base salary plus bonuses.

Regardless of how the deal works out, news of the deal should sit well with fans. The Senators will be looking to keep Giroux in the fold, banking on his experience and leadership to help the team transition to a new leadership core.

As for his production on the ice, the Senators could use Giroux’s depth scoring. His 14 goals last season were crucial. If he can replicate those goal totals, he should be another valuable contributor for the squad.

There’s no question that the Senators are better off with Giroux than without.
