On an eventful night in Kanata, the Ottawa Senators were able to send their fans off with a win

Once again the combination of Claude Giroux, Tim Stützle, and Brady Tkachuk willed the Senators to a win on a special night in the nation’s capital.

Sitting on 998 points entering tonight’s game, Claude Giroux was looking to make history in his hometown, and to nobody’s surprise, he provided the heroics. Scoring 2 goals, including the game-winning goal, and adding an assist to boot, the 35-year-old continued his superb first season as a Senator.

First Period

Who else but Claude Giroux (33) would open the scoring just 5 minutes into the contest, off a beautiful pass by Brady Tkachuk.

As the opening frame winded down, Giroux would waste no time eclipsing the 1000-point plateau, grabbing an assist on Tim Stützle’s 38th goal of the season. The entire Senators bench left the bench to celebrate with Giroux in what was one of, if not the most memorable moment of the season.

Second Period

With not much happening between both sides for the majority of the second period, Hurricanes defenceman Brett Pesce (5) would break the goose egg on a nice goal off the rush.

The Senators would outshoot the Hurricanes 12-8 in the frame and would take a 2-1 lead and a 22-17 advantage on the shot clock into the final period of play.

Third Period

The Hurricanes would tie the game on the powerplay thanks to a precise point shot by Brent Burns for his 15th of the season, assists would go to Martin Necas and Seth Jarvis.

However, the main character of tonight’s game had to put it on ice. Halfway through the final frame, Giroux would finish off a Shane Pinto pass with a terrific finish.

Mads Søgaard enjoyed a terrific bounce-back performance tonight, stopping 27 of 29 shots he faced, as well as a few outstanding saves in tight with the game on the line:

This start will certainly raise the potential goalie of the future’s confidence as he heads into his potential* final start of the season.

The Senators finished ahead on the shot chart 32-29 and were certainly full marks for tonight’s win.
