Gameday Recap: The Ottawa Senators Dominate the St Louis Blues 7-2

Senators blow past Blues in Sunday afternoon action 

The Ottawa Senators hosted the St Louis Blues today on Sunday, February 19th, this high-scoring affair ended with the Ottawa Senators winning 7-2. The sens continue on their hot stretch as they have now won 6 out of their last 8 games.

First Period

In the first period, the Senators appear to have started their game on the slow side, trailing in shots and appearing to give up control of the puck for the majority of the period. Halfway in, Mads Sogaard has already made a few key saves keeping the score to 0-0.

With 4:03 left on the clock, Shane Pinto scores on a pass from Drake Batherson right in the slot, beating Thomas Greiss on the glove side. Pinto has goals in back-to-back games, and ups his season total to 14 goals. Almost immediately after, Sogaard makes a quality save on a shot from Nick Leddy.

After Pinto’s goal, the Sens appear to have woken up a bit, controlling more of the play, but still losing the puck quite often.

Tim Stützle is called for charging with 0:47.1 left in the period. The Sens are on the Penalty Kill to close out the period. The play is under review as it appears as if Colton Parayko is injured. It could be changed to a 5-minute major. The argument is that Stützle appears to have jumped into the hit. Parayko has stayed in the game so far.

After review of the play, the call on the ice stands. 2 minutes for charging. The Blues are on their second powerplay of the evening.

The period ends 1-0 Ottawa, while the Blues lead in shots 12-10.

Second Period

As the second period starts, Jordan Kyrou of the Blues is caught tripping Dylan Gambrell and goes off for 2 minutes. It is now a 4 on 4 for 38 seconds.

Giroux makes a high-danger shot, but he is denied by Greiss.

Alex DeBrincat buries a slapshot on the powerplay at 1:51, he is fed by Stützle and Brady Tkachuk. DeBrincat scores his 19th goal of the season.

with 12:37 left in the second, Tim Stützle scores on a feed from Brady Tkachuk and Claude Giroux. The game is now 3-0. He has scored 5 goals in his last game, scoring his 25th of the year.

Of course, the “Kaptain” has to add to the scoresheet as he reflects a shot from Claude Giroux into the net. It is being reviewed for high-sticking.

After review, the call on the ice stands. Good Goal. Brady Tkachuk now has 7 goals in his last 8 games, scoring his 24th of the season. The assist is credited to Claude Giroux.

After a boarding by Austin Watson on Ivan Barbashev, he drops the gloves with Tyler Tucker. Tucker is called for 2 minutes for instigating, 5 minutes for fighting, and 10 minute-misconduct. Watson is called 2 minutes for boarding and 5 minutes for fighting.

Drake Batherson ups the score to 5-0 with 7:25 minutes left in the second. off of a feed from Alex DeBrincat set up by Shane Pinto. Batherson scores his 17th goal of the season and increases his stats as he scores his second point of the evening.

Ottawa goes to the power play yet again as Calle Rosen is called for hooking on Drake Batherson. Ottawa has scored on 1 of 4 powerplay opportunities so far tonight.

Mads Sogaard continues his stellar performance with a series of fantastic saves.

The Second Period ends 5-0, and Ottawa leads in shots 27-23. The Sends scored 4 goals in the second and completely erased their slow first period.

Third Period

With 18:22 left in the third, Austin Watson blocks a shot and appears in a bit of discomfort. Sens players respond with stick taps on the ice and bench.

Brady Tkachuk is called for slashing on Parayko.  The penalty is killed.

With 12:09 left in the third, Tim Stutzle scores his second goal of the game on a pass from Artem Zub as he collects his 26th goal of the year as he is now on hat trick watch!

Colton Parayko ends the shutout bid for Sogaard by scoring with 10:44 left in the game. This is Parayko’s first goal since December 23rd, against the Seattle Kraken.

Tyler Pitlick adds to the scoresheet as he scores off of a reflection from Justin Faulk with 0:00 left in the game. The game is 6-2.

Artem Zub is called for crosschecking with 8:21 left in the game. The penalty is killed.

Claude Giroux is called for tripping with 5:47 left in the game. The penalty is killed.

Ridley Greig scores his first NHL goal with 1:44 left in the game, off of an offensive zone faceoff as he positioned himself into the slot. The assists are credited to Derick Brassard and Thomas Chabot.

With 1:06 left in the game, Ottawa will finish the game on the penalty kill as Derick Brassard is called for tripping.
