Number Four: Mads Sogaard

The Ottawa Senators second-round pick (37th overall) in the 2019 NHL draft, Mads Sogaard comes in at number four on the Senators goalie prospect ranking.

The Aalborg, Denmark native’s play regressed from 2018-19 to 2019-20. In 2018-19, he put up a GAA of 2.64 and a SV% of 0.921, earning him the starter job on the Medicine Hat Tigers. Through the same number of games as 2018-19, in 2019-20 Sogaard improved in his GAA with a 2.53 average. However, it was his SV% that got worse this year, sitting at an unimpressive 0.908.

The Ottawa Senators had high hopes for him as they traded up in the draft before selecting him in the second round.

He has an advantage over other goalies trying to make the NHL, as he is 6-foot-7 and can practically cover the entire net. His unusually large frame gives him the ability to slide quickly across the crease, which is very helpful when playing in the NHL.

It will be at least a few years before we see Sogaard playing pro hockey, but when he does arrive he could take over the starter reigns in Ottawa sooner than expected.
