The Ottawa Senators have today announced that forward Vitaly Abramov has been recalled to the team from the Belleville Senators.

Vitaly Abramov will have a chance to impress the Ottawa Senators management after being recalled from the minors after just one regular-season game.

Abramov’s recalling comes after both Drake Batherson and Filip Chlapik were sent back down to Belleville to play big minutes and continue their development in the AHL.

The 21-year-old Russian winger was brought into the Senators organisation, along with Jonathan Davidsson and a 2019 first-round pick, in the trade that saw Matt Duchene head down to the Columbus Blue Jackets along with Julius Bergman.

After arriving in Canada, Abramov registered seven points in 18 regular-season games with the B-Sens in 2018/19, also making a solitary appearance with Ottawa.

Before heading back to the minors at the start of the 2019/20 season, Abramov had a strong training camp that had many people wondering if he would stick with the NHL team out of the gate.

After making just one appearance for Belleville this season, Abramov has another opportunity to prove he is ready to make the jump to the NHL a permanent one.

Head coach D.J. Smith has a number of young prospects to work with over the next few seasons and Abramov is viewed as one with a high ceiling, making him arguably the key component in the Duchene trade.

With the Ottawa Senators currently having just 12 forwards on the roster, it effectively guarantees Abramov will get some ice time when the team take on Stanley Cup champions the St. Louis Blues this Thursday.

The decision to swap Batherson for Abramov is an interesting one for the organisation, with Batherson appearing to be closer to NHL-ready than the Russian.
