The Ottawa Senators have today announced that goaltender Marcus Hogberg has agreed to a new two-year extension with the club.

Marcus Hogberg is firmly in contention for a role with the Ottawa Senators next season, having signed a new two-year contract extension with the organisation.

The 24-year-old Swede impressed while carrying the load with the Belleville Senators last season, earning a 21-17-4 record in the minors.

During that stretch, Hogberg earned two shutouts and had a goal against average of 2.32 and had a save percentage of .917.

With long-time starter Craig Anderson entering the final year of his deal, which is likely to be his last with the organisation, it is reasonable to expect Hogberg to get a few looks in the 2019/20 season.

The deal he has agreed to with the Senators appears to suggest he could still spend lengthy spells in Belleville, with the first year of his deal being a two-way situation that would see his salary drop from $700,000 in the NHL down to $125,000 in the A.

The second year of his deal, however, is a straight one-way situation that will pay him $700,000 – with $150,000 of his total deal being guaranteed.

Anders Nilsson is expected to carry backup duties at the start of the season but could see his load increase as the campaign wears on – with Anderson turning 39 before his $4.75 million contract expires next July.

If Hogberg is given an opportunity to play an extended role in the NHL next season, with only four appearances currently under his belt, it would allow Filip Gustavsson the opportunity to claim the AHL starting role as his own and work towards becoming an NHL goalie in the very near future.

Hogberg could reasonably become the Ottawa Senators backup ahead of the 2020/21 season, with Nilsson assuming the starting role – allowing the younger Gustavsson room to grow into a potential starter for the organisation once the team begins to position itself back into playoff contention.

The Senators do have a crowded goaltender room now, with Mike Condon also still under contract with the team, and some moves may be coming that sees someone removed from the equation.
