The Ottawa Senators have announced the appointment of Jack Capuano as an associate coach ahead of the 2019/20 season.

The soon to be 53-year-old later joined the Florida Panthers as an associate coach, running the team’s defence under head coach Bob Boughner – who himself had been linked with the Senators.
It was reportedly Boughner who recommended Capuano to his former assistant, and Sens head coach, D.J. Smith.
The appointment of Capuano is a smart piece of business for the Canadian capital club, with his experience as a defensive coach as well as his tenure in the NHL being valuable assets.
The Ottawa Senators are in a rebuild and need to surround their budding young stars with experienced as well as ambitious coaches – helping to guide them along their journey.
Capuano’s work with a young New York Islanders team will have helped Smith make the decision to hire him and gives the organisation a guy that can work on establishing a strong defensive foundation.
The Senators have two top young defensive talents in Thomas Chabot and Erik Brannstrom and it’s imperative that they are given the best chances of maintained success.
Capuano’s experience as an NHL head coach will also be of huge value to Smith, who is stepping into his first leading role in the league.
Having an experienced guy to confer with and help provide advice and guidance will make Smith’s transition into the role smoother and make his life easier in the early days.
Capuano has reportedly signed a three-year deal with the team so should be expected to be heavily involved throughout this crucial rebuilding stage in the team’s history.
