Ottawa Senators to discover 2019 first round pick position tonight
With just one more game left in the second round of the playoffs, the Ottawa Senators are close to discovering where they will pick in the 2019 draft.
The Ottawa Senators will be hoping the Colorado Avalanche progress in the playoffs tonight, with the outcome of the game having a slight impact on where the Sens will pick in the first round of the 2019 draft.
Trade deadline day saw the Senators acquire the 2019 first round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets, in a deal that saw Matt Duchene and Julius Bergman the other way.
With the Blue Jackets being knocked out of the playoffs by the Boston Bruins, the Senators now know roughly where that traded pick will be.
Currently, the Ottawa Senators hold the 19th overall selection in this year’s draft but could see that move up to 18th overall if the Avalanche overcome the San Jose Sharks.
There were a number of intriguing factors heading into the final few games of the second round of the playoffs, with victories for Colorado and the Dallas Stars, along with Columbus’ exit, seeing the Sens rewarded with the 17th overall pick.
As Dallas, unfortunately, lost thanks to Pat Maroon‘s game-winning goal, 18th overall is now the highest the Senators can expect to pick in the first round.
It is an interesting twist of fate for both the Senators and Avalanche, who seem to have been bound by destiny ever since the two clubs were involved in the fateful trade for Duchene that saw the Sens relinquish this year’s first-round pick (4th overall).

Now the Avalanche could help the Senators out, even if only slightly, while also progressing further in the playoffs and closer towards the Stanley Cup Finals.
A number of top young prospects are expected to be available in the middle of the first round, with players ranking 15th to 30th seemingly difficult to truly separate, with many receiving draft rankings ranging anywhere in that range.
Landing a middle pick is a nice return for the Senators, who could add another first round pick in 2020 if Duchene re-signs in Columbus, and the team could certainly add a player with legitimate NHL potential.
