A strong finish was unable to overcome a weak start for the Ottawa Senators and they fell to the Buffalo Sabres for their fifth straight loss.
Unable to get anything going offensively for two periods, the Ottawa Senators set themselves up for failure from the start. They made a late comeback but were unable to complete it in time and eventually fell by the score of 3-2.
First Period
The first period was a strong one for the Ottawa Senators. They killed off their singular penalty and forced the Sabres into playing their game. The shots were kept low and the Sens were succeeding in forcing the defensive game. The shots were 6 to 5 in favour of Ottawa and the end of the period with the game scoreless.
Second Period
The second period was where the Sens lost their chance to win. They game up two goals in the first five minutes to fall into a 0-2 deficit. The Sens were then unable to convert on the two subsequent powerplays. This came back to bite them as the Sabres would score on a powerplay of their own. With the Sens down 3-0 as the period came to a close, the game already seemed out of reach.
Third Period
The third period saw the Sens make an attempt at a comeback, but it was futile. Cody Ceci scored six minutes in to bring the score to within two. Unfortunately, the Sens weren’t able to score again until there was less than one minute remaining. With only 50 seconds remaining to tie the game, the Ottawa Senators were unable to complete the comeback and fell by the score of 3-2.
