Ottawa continues to struggle after their back-to-back wins in Stockholm versus the Colorado Avalanche. The Senators now sit fifth in the Atlantic and 12th overall in the Eastern Conference.
Ottawa’s skid does not look good on the heels of their blockbuster trade. Earlier this month, Pierre Dorion dealt long-time Senator and top-six forward Kyle Turris in a three-way deal for Matt Duchene.
Duchene is pointless so far in a Senators jersey, having no goals and no assists in six games. Additionally, he boasts a plus-minus stat of -8.
While Duchene cannot be blamed for the team’s abysmal performance over the last few weeks, some fans may be questioning Dorion’s decisions as GM. The competitive playoff team Sens management is trying hard to sell is not looking very promising as they fall lower in the standings.
Ottawa’s schedule does not work in their favor, either. All but one of the Senators’ next nine games are on the road, including a trip to California. The team’s performance over the next two and a half weeks could ultimately determine their playoff situation.
Injury Update
Ottawa’s troubles are compounded by recent injuries on defense. Both Chris Wideman and Mark Borowiecki sustained long-term injuries last week.
Wideman is expected to be sidelined for at least two months with a torn hamstring. Borowiecki’s status looks slightly more positive despite sustaining a concussion and requiring help off the ice at Madison Square Garden.

Due to the recent injuries, Ottawa has recalled Thomas Chabot from Belleville for the second time this season. The 20-year-old defenseman has another chance to show he belongs with the big club. Chabot may help spark the team’s offense, which has managed to score only 5 goals in their last 4 games.
If the Senators want to stay afloat in the standings, the club’s depth will need to step up and be ready to play.
