The Ottawa Senators have been a team that has struggled with injuries, particularly on defence, all season. Now that the team seemed to be healthy they suffered another injury against the Penguins last night.

Last night in their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Ottawa Senators suffered another injury. Evgeni Malkin fell on Chris Wideman and Wideman went down awkwardly. Today it has come out that Wideman tore his hamstring and will be out for weeks.

A Unique Situation

With Wideman out it leaves the Ottawa Senators in an interesting situation. They can choose to either recall a forward or a defenceman. Normally it would make sense to recall a defenceman to fill the void left by Wideman. However, in the game against the Penguins, Wideman was actually dressed as a forward. Even with Wideman out they have six defencemen ready to play. As a result, the Sens have two options to bring up.

Ben Harpur

The first option to bring up would be a replacement on defence, Ben Harpur. Harpur has played for the Sens this season and would have played more if not for an early season injury. With Boucher’s preference to dress seven defencemen lately this may be the more likely option.

Colin White

The other and more interesting option would be to bring up Colin White. White was expected to make the team at the beginning of the season, but he broke his wrist during training camp. He has since recovered but is playing in the AHL. With Wideman going down this would be a great opportunity to give White a chance to make the NHL roster. He has been performing well in the minors and looks ready to take the step.

The Ottawa Senators may have suffered another injury, but they have the depth to bounce back from it. The only question is, who do they bring up?
