The Ottawa Senators had a overall successful training camp and pre-season in determining the level of their prospects. Many top prospects such as Thomas Chabot and Logan Brown performed well throughout camp. However, there was one surprise, the 18 year old Alex Formenton who today was signed to an Entry-Level Contract.
Alex Formenton was drafted 47th overall in the second round by the Ottawa Senators just this past June. Nothing was expected from him going into training camp except that he put his best foot forward and show the coaches his current level of play. However, he went above and beyond his expectations.
Signing
As of today the third of October he is still with the team. Just two days away from the season opener he has yet to be sent back to junior. As a result of his fantastic performance at camp he was awarded an entry-level contract. The contract has an average annual value of $925,000 over three seasons.
Potential NHL Action
Since Formenton is still with the team it seems likely that he will see at least one game of play before being sent back to junior. To do this as a second round draft pick the year he was drafted is an incredibly rare feet. Additionally, when this happens it’s normally a sign of good things to come.
Another Season In Junior
Unfortunately for Formenton it’s unlikely he stays with the Sens for much longer. Derick Brassard is set to return for opening night meaning that one less spot is available. Logan Brown is a year older and a year further into his development. As a result he is more likely to get a permanent spot on the team.

Development
For Formenton this should all be a great learning experience for him. He is progressing much faster than expected and should definitely challenge for a spot on the Ottawa Senators next season. After a year in a bigger role in junior he will that much better and ready to make an impact for the organization.
