The Ottawa Senators have concluded their pre-season. With it wrapped up it means the regular season is just days away, but first let’s look at some takeaways from pre-season.
Pre-season was an up and down ride for the Ottawa Senators. It started out well with two back to back victories over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Game one was by the margin of 6-2 at home. The series then shifted to Toronto where Ottawa was victorious by the score of 5-2. Following their series with Toronto the Sens had three days off before playing Montreal. The break served the team well as the Sens continued their good form with a 5-1 win over their divisional rival. Unfortunately this would be the last taste of victory for the Sens in pre-season.
A Downturn Of Results
Following their win over Montreal the Sens played the Devils where they were absolutely crushed. With a score of 8-1 there weren’t many positives from the game. The only positive thing was that the Sens iced a team of mostly prospects while the Devils played nearly their entire NHL roster. However, this was only the beginning of the Sens struggles.
The Sens played the Winnipeg Jets two days later in what was the only close game of the pre-season for the Sens. They lost 5-3 with the final goal being an empty netter. With every other game being a blowout one way or the other this was a nice change of pace for the team. Unfortunately though the Sens found themselves on the wrong side of score-sheet.
In their final pre-season game the Sens were dealt their most devastating loss of the pre-season. They were defeated by the massive margin of 9-2. This loss was the worst because it can not be attributed to a team of prospects playing against NHL players like in the Devils game. This was for the most part the Sens full lineup.
Emerging Prospects
The players to emerge during training camp were some familiar and some not so familiar faces. Thomas Chabot and Logan Brown excelled as expected. However, Alex Formenton and Filip Chlapik also performed particularly well. Formenton still sits in a position where he may make the team. Unfortunately thought the Sens did suffer an injury to Colin White that set him back nearly two months.

Heading Into The Season
After performing so well early in the schedule the Sens fell flat as pre-season wrapped up. The Ottawa Senators will need to bounce back fast because there’s no more time for excuses. The next game is when results start to matter. With Erik Karlsson still up the Sens will need the supporting cast to step up.
