The Ottawa Senators are making moves to secure their goaltender situation for the next few years. Today it was announced that they have extended Craig Anderson and signed him to a two year contract.

Coming into this season, Anderson was entering the final year of his contract. With any free agent contract negotiations can serve as a distraction. Now the Ottawa Senators no longer have to worry about signing Anderson and he can just play.

The contract will kick in after the conclusion of this season and will bring Anderson to the 2019-2020 NHL season. The deal has an average annual value of 4.75 million dollars. Additionally, Anderson was awarded a partial no trade clause. The clause allows Anderson to submit a 10 team list that he cannot be traded to.

With Anderson signed the Sens now have their goaltending situation set for the next three seasons. Mike Condon signed his contract at the beginning of the summer. Additionally, with Condon only signed to an average annual value of 2.4 million dollars, the Sens only have a little over seven million wrapped up in their goaltending. This gives them the freedom to spend more on the extensions of players such as Turris and Karlsson.

When Anderson’s contract is up he will be 39. This will likely bring him to the end of his NHL career. As a result it will be a time of transition for Ottawa. Mike Condon may be the next starter for the Sens. He performed well last season and will have three years to prove himself. However, the goaltender of the future may be Marcus Hogberg.

The Goalie Of The Future

Hogberg performed well during rookie and training camp. At just the age of 22 he already looks poised to be an NHL goalie. When Anderson finishes his contract Hogberg will be 25, the perfect age for a goalie to begin their NHL career. The Ottawa Senators appear to have security in goal for years to come.
