The last time it was reported that the Ottawa Senators centre Derick Brassard was no longer wearing a no contact jersey it proved to be false. However, now it appears that Brassard is actually close to returning as he’s able to fully practice.

It was announced today that Derick Brassard is no longer wearing a blue non-contact jersey while practicing. This is a huge step forward in his recovery. Additionally, for an Ottawa Senators team that is currently riddled with injuries it’s a good sign going forward. Brassard being able to practice in full does not mean he is necessarily cleared to play games but he is very close.

Dorion stated that Brassard will not play in the Sens final pre-season game versus Montreal. However, he is hopeful that he will be ready to go for the season opener on October fifth when the Sens take on the Washington Capitals.

One Fewer Spot

With the news that Brassard may be ready to start the season with the Sens, it means that one fewer spot will be available for a young player. Likely this means that one of Logan Brown or Alex Formenton will not be with the team come opening night. Although both players have performed very well a choice needs to be made.

Alex Formenton

Unfortunately, the likely choice to be sent back to junior is Alex Formenton. He has performed very well but Brown has simply performed better. He’s a year further along in his development and can play a bigger role. Formenton will learn a lot from going back to junior and playing a bigger role there. Brown has shown that he is ready to be a full-time NHL player.

Logan Brown

Although he wasn’t expected to make the team out of camp, Brown has proved all his doubters wrong. He is the Sens best available forward prospect at the moment and has earned a chance to play the season with the Ottawa Senators.
