Today we begin to countdown the top 10 greatest players in Ottawa Senators history. In the tenth position is a player who just recently retired after this past season. A player who was a fan favourite and was one of the most important players in Ottawa for the entirety of the 2000s, Mike Fisher.
Mike Fisher just recently finished up his NHL career after this past season. He retired after falling in the Stanley Cup Final as a member of the Nashville Predators. He was the Captain of the Predators, but it was not with them that he made a name for himself. Fisher spent the bulk of his career as a member of the Ottawa Senators.
Humble Beginnings
Fisher first made the NHL in 1999 just one year after being drafted by the Sens. Quickly he became one of the most popular members of the team because of his hard working playstyle as well as his positive attitude off the ice. He was known for his aggressive playstyle and soon developed an offensive spark. Although in the shadow of superstars such as Alfredsson, Spezza, and Heatley, Fisher became a good secondary scoring option for the Sens. He became a player who could be relied upon to put up 40 points with the chance of cracking 50.
An Era Of Greatness
Fisher was a member of the Ottawa Senators during the most dominant era in their history. He likely would have stayed with the Sens his entire career had he not been traded. Unfortunately, with the Sens in full rebuilding mode in 2011, Fisher was dealt at the trade deadline along with many of his teammates. It was necessary for the team to trade away players to get better in the future. In fact the first round pick that was acquired from Fisher was used in a package to acquire Bobby Ryan. However, this does not take away the difficulty of losing such a prominent player for the Sens.
