You’ve most likely seen the news that Ottawa Senators prospect Thomas Chabot set the franchise record for most points scored by a defenceman for the Saint John Sea Dogs.
Colorado demanded the blue-liner as part of a package for Matt Duchene. Pierre Dorion and the Ottawa Senators would not budge on their blue-chip prospect. Right now, it’s looking like the right call. Chabot cannot stop scoring.
Considering that the kid has only played 36 games (30 less than the team). That means Chabot is currently on a 1.32 PPG tear, his team romping the Maritimes division of the QMJHL.
To put further emphasis on well he is playing and to what extent he has improved let’s compare his statistics from last year. Playing 47 games he managed 45 points. Therefore, the same points he achieved last season having played 13 games fewer. This is what Elite Prospects had to say about him:
"A quick-thinking two-way defenseman that is able to make fast decisions and help his team whenever he is on the ice. Possesses excellent mobility and has good individual puck skills; can catch the opposition off guard with his speed. All-in-all, a player who strives to be better with every shift, staying a student of the game. Has the potential to flourish into a very reliable all-around defenseman that can eat up minutes. (Curtis Joe, EP 2014)"
The Future
The Ottawa Senators will be extremely keen to get the Quebec native into this lineup next season. Regardless of what happens this post-season Chabot will help lift this team to the next level. The thought of having him and Erik Karlsson in the same linup is one that should excite Ottawa Senators’ fans everywhere.
With Karlsson and Chabot offering such offensive firepower from the blue-line, The System will be so difficult to face. Teams exerting all their injury to break down the Sens defence only to be pinned back on the counter with electrically quick breakout merchants in Karlsson and Chabot.
