The Binghamton Senators answered back after giving up a two goal lead and take the road win by a score of 4-3 over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Goaltender Peter Mannino battled against his former team making 33 saves giving the Senators their third straight win as he ups his record to 6-7-4, 3,84 GAA and 0.897 SV% for Binghamton.

GAME RECAP

Mannino comes up with a nice stop on Penguins forward Bobby Farnham and defenseman Derrick Pouliot as the first period is underway. Then Tom Kuhnhackl gets tripped up by defensman Patrick Mullen as the Pens go on the power play. Mannino stops a one-timer by Scott Wilson as that would be the only shot let by the Senators penalty kill units.

More from Belleville Senators

Defenseman Mike Sdao patiently waits for a clearing and finds the back of the net with his wrister inside the blue line up high past goaltender Jeff Zatkoff giving Binghamton a 1-0 lead. Troy Rutkowski receives a double minor sending the Pens back on the man advantage, but Sens get a break as Buddy Robinson scores on a breakaway for a shorty in on Zatkoff making it 2-0. A 1:14 after, Pens D-man Danny Syvret cuts the Senators’ lead by one with a shot getting by Mannino for a PP goal as Binghamton was out shot by a 15-4 margin in the opening period.

WB/Scranton comes out buzzing in the beginning of the second and tie it up 47 seconds in as Carter Rowney gets a couple of whacks at the puck in the blue paint and it goes by Mannino. On the other end of the ice, Zatkoff stops Senators forward Danny Hobbs in close but it’s Mannino who has made some noise this evening with his latest being a glove save on forward Jayson Magna.

Zatkoff then makes a pad save on Brad Mills and Mannino flashes the glove on Jean-Sebastien Dea and Pouliot as up and down action now taking place. With 15.2 seconds left in the middle frame, Wilson goes top shelf beating Mannino with his 15th of the season giving Wilkes-Barre/Scranton their first lead of the night as the Penguins hard skating pays out.

Penguins with a 3-2 edge into the third sees the contest tied up once again 1:39 in as Mills skates through Pouliot and dishes to Max McCormick as his slapper finds the mesh scoring his eighth of the season capitalizing on Binghamton’s strong start. McCormick soon after rings one off the post as then Mannino robs Rowney down in the other zone.

At last the Senators top line cashes in as Prince taps in the puck mid-air for the go ahead goal from a pass by Schneider making it 4-3. Binghamton gives a gift offensive opportunity allowing a late power play for the Penguins as Guillaume Lepine is off for a delay of game as he chipped the puck over the glass on a clearing attempt. Zatkoff pulled for a six on four man advantage with less than a minute but hang on for the win. Shots for the game, 36 – 23 Pens.

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS

  • Mannino the story of the night with several great glove saves saving the team in the first period as they came out flat. However, scoring 2 goals on 4 shots gave them the early lead.
  • PK went 1/6 and that shorthanded goal by Robinson gives the team 10 which ties them with the San Antonio Rampage for the overall lead in the league.
  • Prince with the GWG for the second consecutive night as he continues to produce with his strong play backing him up as he’s having a career season numbers wise.
  • Robinson with a better game offensively tonight as he got a lucky break with a clearing attempt hitting one of the ref’s giving Buddy a clear break to the net.
  • Senators haven’t packed it in as of yet trying as they will with a depleted line up full of injuries.
  • Senators first win in Penguins territory since Feb 19th 2014.
  • With Darren Kramer and Ryan Dzingel both out getting banged up on Friday, the fourth line was double shifted from the other three centermen along with Lepine filling in.
  • On a side note, I’m hearing conversations throughout some media avenues that the Senators 8 goals scored in a win against the Adirondack Flames on Mar 15th is a club record. It is not. They tied it, as it has occurred 3 times in franchise history; 8-0, Worcester, Feb 15th 2014 – 8-3, Albany, Dec 26th 2011 – 8-5, Norfolk, Dec 1st 2007. The most allowed was a 10-4 drubbing in Rochester led by Dave Cameron‘s squad back on Dec 16th 2006 with goaltender Kelly Guard in net for all 10.
