The Binghamton Senators had a strong showing in net by Peter Mannino and the special teams made the difference in this afternoon’s win over the Syracuse Crunch 4-2. Mannino made 38 saves while the Senators had a pair of power play goals along with a shorthanded tally as they have won three in a row.
GAME RECAP
Carter Ashton of the Crunch feeds the puck to Yanni Gourde in front and his quick snapper beats goaltender Mannino’s stick side for a 1-0 lead on the power play. A little more than five minutes later a puck comes free from a goal mouth scramble to the liking of defenseman Chris Wideman as he unloads a blistering slap shot from inside the point that sails by a screened Kristers Gudlevskis to tie it up.

Derek Grant and Ryan Martindale get tangled up in the blue paint with Grant landing on the ice hurting, but play continues as Aaron Johnson slaps one home from the slot for a 2-1 lead for another power play goal with Joey Mormina off for high-sticking.
Senators with more scoring opportunities in the second but Gudlevskis has looked strong in net. As the horn blows David Broll nudges Darren Kramer into fight with both landing some short jabs but more hugging than anything as a typical fight goes when Kramer is involved.
It doesn’t appear Grant has missed a beat from earlier on as he gets blocked in front on a shorthanded back-handed shot towards the net but along comes Cole Schneider to cash in on the rebound with Mormina and Cody Kunyk getting caught up with one another in the goal mouth as to increase the Senators lead by two.
With 4:44 left in the third, Binghamton gets a huge insurance goal when defenseman Patrick Mullen winds up for a snapper from his knee that gets tipped in front by Grant for the team’s third man
advantage goal making it 4-1 Senators.
Syracuse closes the gap by two with Mannino’s gaffe from behind the cage as he mishandles the puck leaving easy pickings for Joel Vermin to steal as Tanner Richard gets free with the loose puck and swings in front for an easy one. Syracuse’s Jake Dotchin lets it rip from the point but Mannino gloves it as Binghamton wins it 4-2.
NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
- Shots end up with the Crunch in front 40-34 as Mannino had a strong night in-between the pipes.
- Nice game by Grant as he took the game’s first star with a goal and an assist, followed by Mullen’s two assists.
- Senators ended up 2/4 on the power play while Syracuse was 2/5. Not your typical outing from the two rivals today that featured only one fight.
- Shane Prince another good game from him as he settled for an assist but ended up with 5 shots as that first line continues to roll with Carter Camper and Schneider.
- Johnson’s check to the head call in the third left his team skate with 5 defenseman for 10 minutes, another costly penalty to add to his resume covering his season.
- Syracuse fans in tow as a nice crowd on hand for the only Sunday matinée of the season. Much better 3:00 start versus 5:00 in the past.
