Ottawa Senators Forwards 3rd Quarter Grades, Michalek and Stone Impress

Milan Michalek has risen, the Ottawa Senators are hot. Alex Chiasson continues to be a frustrating forward and so does David Legwand. I have no idea why the Senators would dump Erik Condra, but Jean-Gabriel Pageau has proven to be a full-time NHL player.

We saw a few call-ups this quarter, as Shane Prince and Matt Puempel have both had time in the NHL. As the season end nears and Ottawa makes one last playoff push, here are the evaluations of Ottawa’s 3rd quarter:

3rd quarter Grades:

B-. <strong><a href=. Quarter 2: B+. Ottawa Senators. CLARKE MACARTHUR

"MacArthur’s 2nd quarter pace: 24 goals, 46 pointsMacArthur’s current pace: 20 goals, 40 points"

Quarter 2: A. Ottawa Senators. MIKE HOFFMAN. A. Hoffman certainly didn’t slow down this quarter. He continues to score at a pace of over 30 goals, and for a player who was a healthy scratch under Paul MacLean, that’s not bad. You know who else was a scratch under Paul MacLean? Mark Stone.

"Mike Hoffman is on Pace for a 30 goal season"

ALEX CHIASSON. C. Chiasson had a similar third quarter to his second quarter, so his grade doesn’t change. Chiasson was once on pace for more than 50 points through his first 20 games as a Senator, those days are gone as Chiasson has become a full-time bottom 6 player on this team.. Quarter 2: C. Sénateurs D'Ottawa

Quarter 2: B+. Ottawa Senators. MARK STONE. A+. Stone was easily Ottawa’s best forward this quarter. Put aside his production and even looking at his day-to-day effort on the ice, we see he’s been great. Looking at his stats, we see he has put up 18 points in his last 20 games. A great quarter for the 22-year-old rookie earns him an A+

A-. Ryan has slowed a little in recent games, but has still been Ottawa’s best forward all season long. His 45 points on the season is nice to see, however we’d like to see more goals out of the American sniper. Ryan plays at about the pace of his second quarter grade, so his mark stays at an A-.  . Quarter 2: A-. Ottawa Senators. BOBBY RYAN

KYLE TURRIS. A. Kyle Turris had a definite step up in the 3rd quarter. Recently he’s been on a tear, recording 11 points in his past 11 games as Turris now sits with Erik Karlsson and Bobby Ryan at around the same point range. A solid quarter for Turris.. Quarter 2: A-. Ottawa Senators

This guy is not a fit in Ottawa, he’s been fine as a player, but he doesn’t fit here. It’d be nice to move Legwand at the deadline, but if that can’t happen, an off-season move is fine.. Quarter 2: C. Ottawa Senators. DAVID LEGWAND. C

B+. Zibanejad had a great second quarter, his 3rd quarter was good as well, but a little step back brings his grade down. Zibanejad gets a B+ this quarter.. Quarter 1: A-. Ottawa Senators. MIKA ZIBANEJAD

"Zibanejad had no points through 9 games to start the season, he now has 15 goals on the year."

A. Milan Michalek was easily Ottawa’s biggest riser in the third quarter, Milan Michalek has played well by recording 16 points in his last 20 games. Michalek receives an A as he has become a top 6 forward on this team. Quarter 2: C+. Ottawa Senators. MILAN MICHALEK

"Milan Michalek had 9 points through his first 33 games, he has 16 in his last 20."

B+. Why the Ottawa Senators wouldn’t want to retain Erik Condra’s services baffles me. He’s a solid bottom 6 guy and even had a 5 game point streak in the 3rd quarter. Sure there are young kids coming up, but Condra isn’t the player who needs replacing. Quarter 2: B. Ottawa Senators. ERIK CONDRA

Ottawa Senators. CURTIS LAZAR. B. Curtis Lazar looks to be adjusting to the NHL game. He’s noticeable been stronkg on the puck and did record 2 goals in the third quarter. Lazar just turned 20 and as a young NHL player, he meets expectations and earns a B. Quarter 2: NR

JEAN-GABRIEL PAGEAU. B+. Jean-Gabriel Pageau has become a full-time NHL player on this team. Pageau makes an ideal 4th line center, and in what he lacks in size he makes up for in heart. Pageau goes to the corners hard and generates play. If Erik Condra isn’t brought back, JGP can play a similar role.. Quarter 2: NR. Ottawa Senators

Zack Smith, Chris Neil not ranked due to injuries. Colin Greening not ranked due to time in AHL.
