Syracuse Crunch Cools Off Binghamton Senators With 5-3 Win

facebooktwitterreddit

The Syracuse Crunch cooled off a somewhat hot  Binghamton Senators team coming off winning their last four of five, in a 5-3 victory tonight in Syracuse. In the latest between the two I-81 rivals saw a back and forth battle with the Crunch cashing in more often.

GAME RECAP

A  beautiful passing on display between Cole Schneider, Carter Camper and Shane Prince would result in a Senator goal as Schneider with a cross ice pass to Prince, then to Camper in front of netminder Kristers Gudlevskis for the tip in for his ninth of the season at 16:14 on their first shot of the opening period.

Syracuse would tie it three minutes after with Jake Dotchin grabbing a loose puck high in the slot and wrists it glove side past goaltender Peter Mannino. Then the Crunch pull ahead by a goal when Carter Ashton skates down the right circle and lets go on a bouncing puck that beats Mannino again glove side with 14.3 seconds left making it 2-1 to end the first.

More from Belleville Senators

At the start of the second Syracuse scored their third unanswered goal of the night when Joel Vermin snaps a shot by Mannino’s stick side with Fredrik Claesson all over him for a two goal lead. Soon after it looked to be another Crunch tally from a shot off the stick of Slater Koekkoek but Mannino manages to get a glove swiping the puck away from behind him before it crosses the goal line with Henri Ikonen in the blue paint trying to get wood on it. Wow.

That seemed to energize a sluggish Senators performance so far as Max McCormick gets a stick past two Crunch defensemen and finds Garrett Thompson as his quick shot gets in past Gudlevskis to narrow the game by one. Binghamton haven’t tested Gudlevskis often and appear tired with a testament to their shot total of just 15 through two periods including two in the last eight seconds.

Syracuse buzzing early with Mannino keeping it a one goal game. Defenseman Aaron Johnson draws a tripping penalty and Syracuse generates some offensive opportunities and are successful with Mike Angelidis pouncing on a Joey Mormina rebound for a power play goal upping the lead to 4-2.

Senators making it a close one with Patrick Mullen and Colin Greening skating in on an odd man rush as Greening’s backhander swat over Gudlevskis is good for a shorthanded goal to pull Binghamton back by one with a 1:12 left. But Crunch score an empty netter by Yanni Gourde as that ends it with Syracuse on top.

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS

  • Game completes a 7 in 11 day period as the team will have some time to rest before their next one  on Friday at home.
  • Camper on a tear having 11 points in his last 13 games as that line he’s centering is on a roll.
  • Mannino kept the Senators in it with his 35 saves as the offense wasn’t there for the most part as you’re not going to win against Syracuse with only 3 goals to show for.
  • Fights break out between Buddy Robinson and Mormina along with Chris Wideman and Angelidis after the empty netter in the third in what was a rather calm game between the two rivals.
  • Greening re-called after the game in a surprising move as he’s been a force for Binghamton.
