The Binghamton Senators defeats keep piling up as they lose their fourth straight this time to the Worcester Sharks by a score of 6-3 in the battle of .500 clubs in Massachusetts. Andrew Hammond was in net for his 11th loss of the season in stopping 30 of 36 shots as the team is in a downhill slope in desperately searching for some wins as their playoff chances begin to dwindle.
GAME RECAP
With Mike Sdao getting a boarding penalty call less than two minutes into the game, Willie Coetzee takes advantage scoring his third of the season beating Hammond with a wrist shot from the circle for a 1-0 lead. Worcester increases its lead by two when Daniil Tarasov flips the puck to Chris Tierney on a two on one rush shooting over the sprawling goaltender for a 2-0 game.

Just 16 seconds after David Dziurzynski puts the Senators on the board scoring his fourth of the season on the doorstep of Shark’s goalie Troy Grosenick to cut it to a 2-1 game. Then Derek Grant draws a hooking charge that sends the Sharks to the power play for the third time and end up scoring. Tarasov gets the goal with some quick triangular passing by Coetzee and Tierney surrounding Hammond. Binghamton with some late pressure but Grosenick is solid between the pipes. Senators with some costly penalties and Hammond’s usual below average performance sounds like a broken record already, as shots end up 15-11 Sens.
Sharks start the second period on *gasp* another power play left over from the first but were sustained by the Senators. Darren Kramer cuts the lead to one with his first of the season while rushing the net putting home the loose puck making it 3-2 game. Senators playing well in the second as they now have new life. Hammond doesn’t do the team any favors though as Pat Mullen saves a goal with Hammond out of position on a save.
Sharks Ryan Carpenter scores and now it’s back to a two goal lead for Worcester 4-2 as Hammond just gave up on the play with his shot from the circle. Jeremy Langlois with a breakaway but Hammond comes up with the save. Then with a minute and a half left in the second Shane Prince unleashes a wrister that nicks Matt Puempel’s stick for a re-direct by Grosenick’s blocker for a power play tally and once again we have a one goal game.
Buddy Robinson with an open ice hit on Adam Burish sending him to the ice is highlighted into the third period as Senators look to tie it. But Konrad Abeltshauser ruins the Senators chances as he beats Hammond glove side from high in the slot for a 5-3 Sharks lead. Worcester adds one more with Langlois getting another man advantage goal for a final of 6-3. Shots end up 36-29 Sharks.
NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
- Puempel gets a stick to the face in the first and left for the dressing room but was able to return with a full caged helmet.
- Hammond has zero confidence. And it shows with the rest of his defense. Have we mentioned this before? He clearly just gave up on the Shark’s final three goals as his frustrating season marches on.
- Worcester ended up 3/6 on the power play as the Senators were 1/2.
- Mullen fell onto the puck preventing a goal in the second as he didn’t get a glove on it in the blue paint therefore no penalty shot was awarded.
- Alex Grant missed his first game of the season after getting clipped in the face drawing blood last Wednesday in Portland.
- News of the day reached Binghamton as Todd Bertuzzi and the Ottawa Senators have come to terms of a PTO contract that would have Bertuzzi in the line-up starting for Binghamton. Not sure what to make of this, or who’s spot he takes out of the line-up.
