Scotty Greenham’s Demotion Causing Quite The Stir

There’s a lot to be said about the series of events that have taken place over the last few days, as the Binghamton Senators made some roster moves that have caused an uproar by the fan base. Just take a peek on the team’s Facebook page and that should do the trick if you’re interested.

First it was the recent signing of veteran goaltender Peter Mannino that I posted here. That further crowed the net as the Senators now had three goalies with Andrew Hammond and Scott Greenham being the other two. Questions were asked and soon addressed as the team wasn’t going to go with a trio of players anytime soon.

As it sits Hammond is the only one of the three with a 2-way contract and is considered a prospect in the organization, so Greenham was the choice in being squeezed out of the line-up and sent to Evansville, Indiana. He’ll join another Senator goalie prospect in Chris Driedger as he’s been with the Icemen all season long.

More from Belleville Senators

So really, Greenham (7-4-1 2.38 GAA 0.926 SV%) has gone from a starter in Binghamton to a back up role to Driedger in Evansville as one way of looking at it. Another spin is the Senators now have good depth in net. If Hammond is needed up in Ottawa, Greenham will be back where as before Driedger was the one.

It’s not at all a popular move with many fans as Greenham was starting the last three games and helped the team to their current three game winning streak including a 3-0 shutout last Friday on home ice. He’s been playing in relief of Hammond (6-9-2 3.41 GAA 0.903 SV%) who has been suffering in goal as of late. Not the best numbers but didn’t get consistent games out of the defense in some earlier losses.

Speaking of Driedger, he’ll remain with the Icemen the rest of the way as his game takes shape. He’s had a rough go at it posting a 6-13-2 record over 22 games with a 3.47 GAA, 0.893 SV%. With Binghamton he’s been in net for two wins this season in relief.

It’s not a fair shake for Greenham, but I love the signing of Mannino as from this point on he’s going to be relied on in helping out Hammond’s work load and no more back to back’s should be the process in moving forward. If the Senators make the playoffs, Mannino has experience and looks to be the one in finally getting the Penguins off our backs in the post season. I just hope there’s enough gas in the tank for the 30-year-old.

Let’s hope this plan starting tonight in Wilkes/Barre-Scranton works.
