Saturday’s evening game didn’t go in the favour of Ottawa, where St. Louis topped them 3-2.
GAME RECAP
St Louis opened up the scoring on a nifty move by Maxim Lapierre in the first period. Cody Ceci looked silly as Lapierre dangled the 20-year-old and finished by sliding the puck through Robin Lehner. The Goal was Lapierre’s 1st of the season. Ottawa tied the game back up with 4 minutes remaining as Mika Zibanejad finished a chance set up by Bobby Ryan.
Vladmir Tarasenko gave the blues the advantage again with his 12th of the season. Tarasenko continues to be among the league lead in Goals and Points and is currently putting up an All-Star worthy campaign.
2-1 St. Louis was the score heading into the 2nd, where Alex Steen widened the gap on a goal that beat Robin Lehner glove side. Erik Karlsson picked things up in the second and had a few nice zone rushes that really showed off his game.
Karlsson brought the game to 3-2 3 minutes after Steen’s goal on a PP goal from the point. That was all the offence for the night, and despite some late pressure and a few nice chances, Brian Elliott was amazing for the Blues.
St Louis wins this one in regular time, as Ottawa fails to record a point. Ottawa is now sitting at a 9-6-4 record.
NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS
- David Legwand and Colin Greening both had solid games. Nice to see Greening show he’s capable.
- Patrick Wiercioch had a rough outing. He’s been in a rut and with a logjam on D, the future is unknown
- Bobby Ryan and Mika Zibanejad both had solid games, nice to see them get on the score sheet.
- Erik Karlsson had a slow start but improved as the game went on
- Vladmir Tarasenko is a great player, kudos to St. Louis on that pick. With Jaden Schwartz there as well, they have to be contending this year.
- How many 1st line players does St Louis have? Backes, Stastny, Schwartz, Tarasenko, Steen, Oshie, Lehtera?
UP NEXT
The Senators travel to Detroit to face the Red Wings and then to St Louis to play the Blues again. With rumours of Daniel Alfredsson’s retirement, it will be interesting to see what develops and what happens on monday.
