The Sens fought till the final round but in the end the Edmonton Oilers landed coveted NCAA free agent Justin Schultz. The former Wisconsin Badger was a 2nd round selection of the Anaheim Ducks in 2008 but informed the Ducks earlier this month he would not sign an Entry Level Contract with the club and rather pursue the open market making it clear he was planning to play in Canada. After 2 dominant seasons putting up over 70 points as a defence man at Wisconsin he was certainly a sought after commodity. Schultz treated the proceedings more like he was a contestant on the popular TV show “The Bachelor” as he had teams come entertain him and called back one by one in letting know of his decision as if he was on the show giving out roses. Rumours suggest that the Senators were the very last team to be informed he would not be signing with them. After phone calls from Paul Coffey and Wayne Gretzky its not hard to see why Schultz was tempted to move to Edmonton. In Ottawa he would have been a terrific compliment for Erik Karlsson but instead becomes just another target for Chris Neils for-check.
