NHL.com recently conducted a re-draft and took a shot at building all 30 NHL teams from scratch with every NHL player available on the board. The draft order was the same order from the 2011 NHL Entry Draft with the Edmonton Oilers selecting first. The draft was a snake draft and consisted of 23 rounds and 690 players being selected.
So without further ado, here’s how your Ottawa Senators fared in the re-draft:
PLAYER | CAP HIT | ||||
Roberto Luongo | 5.333 | ||||
Patrick Marleau | 6.9 | ||||
James van Riemsdyk | 1.654
James Neal | 2.875 | ||||
Jack Johnson | 4.357 | ||||
Stephane Robidas | 3.3 | ||||
Robyn Regehr | 4.02 | ||||
Gregory Campbell | 1.1 | ||||
Cal Clutterbuck | 1.4 | ||||
Shawn Horcoff | 5.5 | ||||
Max Pacioretty | 1.625 | ||||
Daniel Winnik | 0.95 | ||||
Roman Hamrlik | 3.5 | ||||
Ales Kotalik | 3 | ||||
Radek Dvorak | 1.5 | ||||
Darroll Powe | 1.067 | ||||
Colton Orr | 1 | ||||
Shaone Morrisonn | 2.075
Kurt Sauer | 1.75 | ||||
Stephane Da Costa | 1.325
Brian Elliott | 0.6 | ||||
Brad Richardson | 1.175 | ||||
*Oscar Moller | 3 | ||||
TOTAL SALARY | 59.006 |
First off, I don’t believe with the sixth overall pick in the re-draft and with so many NHL superstars still left on the board, that Ottawa would select Roberto Luongo with their first pick. And then with their second pick, Ottawa would not pick up another player in Patrick Marleau who cannot perform in the playoffs like Luongo.
The rest of the picks aren’t too bad with the exception being the selection of meat head Colton Orr. The only Senators related players selected were current Sen Stephane Da Costa and former scapegoat Brian Elliott.
Here’s how the lines were projected to be for this new squad:
Forwards
James van Riemsdyk – Patrick Marleau – Cal Clutterbuck
James Neal – Shawn Horcoff – Ales Kotalik
Max Pacioretty – Gregory Campbell – Radek Dvorak
Daniel Winnik – Darroll Powe – Colton Orr
Scratches: Stephane Da Costa, Brad Richardson, Oscar Moller
Defensemen
Jack Johnson – Robyn Regehr
Stephane Robidas – Roman Hamrlik
Shaone Morrisonn – Kurt Sauer
Goalies
Roberto Luongo
Brian Elliott
And here is the theory behind the drafting selections:
The team is built around his goaltender, and he built well. His six defensemen are solid from top to the bottom, and the top line is a genuine scoring threat. If the Senators can find some secondary scoring, they could be a threat in the Northeast Division.
And here are a few of the interesting picks:
- Edmonton selects Sidney Crosby first overall, but then proceeds to destroy the team by selecting Sheldon Souray, Wade Redden and Dany Heatley.
- Alex Ovechkin in drafted third overall as Colorado ops for Corey Perry over the Alex the GR8.
- The Toronto Maple Leafs select no one from their current roster, thus proving that even they think their team sucks.
- Buffalo uses the motto “if you can’t beat them, might as well join them” as they select both Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson.
NHL.com hopes to enter all the new rosters/teams into EA Sports NHL 12 and to see who wins in a simulated season and playoffs. What do you think of all the revamped teams? Will this Ottawa team be any good?
