Awards Week: Jack Adams Award

Beginning today and running through next Tuesday, SenShot will be offering our picks for the 7 major NHL awards.  The awards will be handed out on Tuesday, June 22nd in Las Vegas.

THE JACK ADAMS AWARD

The Jack Adams Award is presented “to the NHL coach judged to have contributed the most to his team’s success.”-NHL.com

There were a number of deserving candidates for the award, but after the voting was completed by the NHL Broadcasters Association, there were three names left standing:

Dan Bylsma, Pittsburgh Penguins – Bylsma directed the Penguins to the 4th best overall record in the NHL, and he did so while missing 2 of the league’s top 10 (arguably top 5) players.  Evgeni Malkin missed 39 games in total with a knee injury among other ailments.  Sidney Crosby was in the middle of a career year until he missed the last 41 games with post concussion syndrome.

Barry Trotz, Nashville Predators – The only coach in franchise history directed the low budget Predators to the tenth best record in the league.  The team qualified for the playoffs for the 6th time in 7 seasons, despite a roster devoid of any offensive stars.

Alain Vigneault, Vancouver Canucks – Guided the Canucks to the President’s Trophy wotj 54 wins and 117 points, 10 more than the 2nd place Washington Capitals.  Had a star-studded roster to work with, but some would argue that making a team like the Canucks reach the lofty expectations is as difficult, if not more, than over-achieving.

SENSHOT selects:

Dan Bylsma from the Pittsburgh Penguins.  We feel that the job Bylsma did, especially in the second half of the season without his top two gunners was exceptional and went a long way to showing how great a job he can do.  He does, if fact do more than stand behind the bench and call #87 or #71 every other shift.  He adapted the system to his personnel and that is the mark of a good coach.  Bylsma was the unanimous selection from SenShot for this award.
