General Manager Byran Murray spoke to the media for the first time in two months on a number of topics. Here’s the video courtesy of SensTV.
Here are the highlights from the press conference:
- On Daniel Alfredsson’s upcoming surgery: The Sens and Alfie felt now was the best time for him to have surgery after his rehab program since the season ended has not had the desired results. The recovery time is estimated at 4-6 weeks which should have Ottawa’s captain back and in game shape for training camp. Murray isn’t concerned either about Alfie not returning to form as he knows Alfie has an uncanny ability to heal quickly.
- On the upcoming draft: Murray believes there are a number of top end centers(forwards) available in the upcoming draft and that is why they brought in forwards Gabriel Landeskog (LW), Jonathan Huberdeau(C/LW), Sean Courturier(C), Ryan Strome(C) and Mika Zibanejad(C) to have a closer look at them. Ottawa worked out these five prospects and Murray had a sit down meeting with each of them to get to know them a little better.
- On trading up at the draft: Murray said he would like to move up and grab one of the sure-fire prospects at the top of the draft. He said right now the price is high and that he is going to wait till closer to the draft (and on draft night) to see what the cost will be to move up. Murray also stated that if Huberdeau or Landeskog were available at 6th, he would take them. However, it is yet to be known if he will move up in the draft to land one of these guys.
- On trading a defenceman: Murray does admit that he has an asset in the number of defencemen in the organization and if the opportunity comes up to use that asset in a trade to better the team, he will. But as of now, he has nothing on the go.
- On the search for a new head coach: Murray has had a number of interviews for the vacant Ottawa bench and would like to have a coach in place before the draft. Murray is searching for a good communicator who will hold veterans accountable and will also teach the young players on the team. Murray was tight lipped on this issue and did not tip his hand any which way.
