Not So Lucky – Sens Fall To 6th In The Draft

Your Ottawa Senators rebuild just got a little bit harder. Hoping to win the Draft Lottery  tonight and move into first overall, Ottawa was a victim of their position in the standings. The worst case scenario for Ottawa was for a team not in the top 5 to win the lottery and push Ottawa out of the top 5 and into the 6th draft slot. Well thats what happened as the New Jersey Devils won the lottery and moved in to 4th from the 8th slot pushing Ottawa into 6th.

But not all is lost. With no clear cut number one prospect in the draft, there are many good prospects to choose from. Most likely available at the 6 spot in this year’s draft will be centres Sean Couturier, Ryan Strome and Jonathan Huberdeau. GM Byran Murray was on the radio speaking about these three and had this to say about them. He said Couturier is a big kid, with good speed and range and reminds him of Jason Spezza. Murray said Huberdeau is very talented with a good head and hands and has good vision. And for Strome, Murray said he was a smart kid who’s a good playmaker.

These three are all potential second line centres  in the future if they are drafted by the Sens. Playing behind Spezza will do wonders for one of these kids and maybe Ottawa can finally find their true second line centre. And don’t forget, with 12 picks in this year’s draft (and five in the first two rounds), Ottawa has many assets available if they want to move up in the draft.

Murray is well known as a great drafter and has the track record to prove it. I have confidence in Murray and his scouting team that he will pick the best available player with the 6th pick. So with two and a half months until the draft, there will be tons of speculation on who Ottawa will pick.

So Sens fans, what do you think?
