Game Report: Sens Fall in OT 4-3 to Blus Jackets

facebooktwitterreddit

Your Ottawa Senators battled the Columbus Blue Jackets last night to ring in the New Year. But for the Senators, the game capped off a horrible year for the organization. Losing 4-3 in overtime, the Sens end the calendar year with 38 wins and 41 loses. This loss is also the 18th of the season for the Sens which ties them for third in the league for the most loses. Ottawa ends December with a record of 5-9 and sitting in 10th in the East.

This game was also the second game without Jason Spezza. However, the Sens managed to create some offense this game. Directing over 35 shots on goal for the second straight game, Ottawa found a little magic with the new line combinations that Clouston put together. With three different goal scorers, Ottawa battled back from a 3-0 deficit to push the game into overtime to get at least one point.

The Sens offense  got on the board with goals from Daniel Alfredsson, Mike Fisher and Nick Foligno. With Spezza out, Ottawa is going to need these three to pick up the ball and carry the offense.

On the negative side, Brian Elliott  allowed four goals for the second game in a row. This time only facing 23 shots, Elliott had no help from his defense in the game. On every goal except the first, Elliott was put in a bad situation by his teammates.

Here are the game highlights  courtesy of NHL.com.

***Three Stars***

First Star: Jakub Voracek – earns it with the OT winner and an assist.

Second Star: Daniel Alfredsson – for sending the game into overtime.

Third Star: Jim O’Brien – for playing his first career NHL game. Hat Tip to Jimmy-O!

The Sens can be glad they can put this game and year behind them as they have a quick turnaround as they play the Maple Leafs on New Year’s Day. Hopefully they can start the New Year off on the right foot. ‘Til next time, GO SENS GO!!!!!
