As the Senators embark on a 2 day break between games 1 and 2, most Senators fans will be waiting with bated breath, waiting to hear good news on the Jason Spezza front.

Mar 16, 2012; Ottawa, ON, CAN; Ottawa Senators centre Jason Spezza (19) in the third period against the Montreal Canadiens at Scotiabank Place.
The Senators looked ok at certain points last night, but the big body, skilled centre would make a difference. A 3-goal difference, maybe not, but Kyle Turris is overmatched in this series against Crosby or Malkin, just like I predicted he would be. One body, especially one of Spezza’s caliber, could make the difference between having a shot to win a couple of games or bowing out early.

His offensive creativity is unmatched on the Senators forward units, and that would be a weapon, especially on the power play. If Spezza was in the lineup, it provides another dangerous option that would free Erik Karlsson up for more quality scoring chances.

Even if he can’t give a 100% effort at 5 on 5, I would have no problem using up a roster spot for Spezza to play 6 or 7 minutes as a power play specialist. Matt Kassian played less than 10 ineffective minutes. Pittsburgh doesn’t really have a tough guy per say that Kassian has to deter, so his placement in the lineup is a waste. Putting Spezza on as the 12th forward to just play in offensive situations couldn’t hurt.

Hopefully this is a moot point and Spezza will be able to play Friday in a full-time role. But in the interim, this would be an option worth pursuing. Ottawa needs any finishing option they can find, and barring the insertion of a Mark Stone or Stefan Noeson who are capable of putting the puck in the net, Spezza would be my 1st and only choice.

The miraculous comeback from an injury that was expected to take months is welcome news for Senators fans who are looking forward to clinching a playoff spot and making some noise in the post-season.
