The Ottawa Senators have today announced that winger Michael Carcone has agreed to a new two-year extension with the organisation.

Michael Carcone originally joined the Ottawa Senators in the trade that also saw the club acquire defenceman Nikita Zaitsev and winger Connor Brown on July 1st.

The 23-year-old Ajax, Ontario native has so far spent his entire professional career playing in the AHL, with the Utica Comets and Toronto Marlies, and is most likely going to start the 2019/20 season with the Belleville Senators.

Originally going undrafted, having earned 130 points (59 goals, 71 assists) in 116 appearances for the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the QMJHL, Carcone has taken a long time in his development but showed real promise with the Marlies last season.

After inconsistent play saw him earn 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists) in 42 games, Carcone turned up his performance and earned almost a point-per-game (13GP: 6G-4A-10PTS) as the Marlies came close to reaching the Calder Cup finals for a second year running.

The 2018/19 season was by far Carcone’s most impressive in the minors and the Ottawa Senators will now be hoping to see the winger take the next steps, potentially leading to a call up to the NHL roster at some stage next season.

While the organisation is optimistic about Carcone’s potential as an undrafted prospect, the two-year extension still protects the club financially if he finds himself remaining in the AHL and never cracking the NHL roster.

If Carcone plays in the show, he will hold a cap hit of $700,000, while his first year in the minors will see him earn $85,000 – with a pay rise to $115,000 in his second season.

The obvious hope is that the Senators have a player on their hands that can push for a roster spot in the near future, making the trade that saw Cody Ceci, Aaron Luchuk and Ben Harpur depart the Canadian capital, see the team acquire three NHL players.
