Entering their seventh game of the season the Ottawa Senators were coming off a loss to the Vancouver Canucks. Facing the New Jersey Devils, despite leading for much of the game, the Sens faltered and eventually fell in overtime.

The Ottawa Senators entered the game with a 3-1-2 record to start the season. It would be the second game of the season for Erik Karlsson and the Sens were looking to give him his first win.

First Period

The first period started with one of the quickest starts to a game in a long time. Within the first five Nico Hischier scored to give the Devils the lead, Turris tied the game up and Hischier scored again to give the Devils a 2-1 lead. In what has become a habit for the Ottawa Senators, these were the first two goals of Hischier’s career. Despite the fast start there would be no more goals in the first period. The game went to intermission with the Devils leading 2-1.

Second Period

Entering the second period the Ottawa Senators looked to tie the game up quickly and they would do just that. Derick Brassard scored his fourth of the season five minutes in to tie the game at two. Two minutes later Alex Burrows scored his first of the season on the powerplay to give the Sens their first lead of the game. This was his 200th career goal. The Tom Pyatt would add one more goal late in the period to give the Sens a two goal lead going into intermission.

Third Period

The third period didn’t start in an ideal way for the Sens. Kyle Palmieri scored four minutes to cut the Sens lead to one. For the remainder of the period the Sens played cautiously trying to protect the lead. Unfortunately, they were unable to do so and the Devils would score with five minutes remaining to tie the game at four. There would be no more goals and the game would go to overtime.

Overtime

Overtime was a quick affair. The Sens were never able to get anything going and the Devils score just one minute to give them the win 5-4.

Highlights And Lowlights

The highlight of the night was seeing Erik Karlsson show his still dominant form. He got three assists in just his second game back. Unfortunately, his strong performance was overshadowed by the poor late game performance by the Sens. They choked a two goal lead in the third period. As a result, they only got one point when they should have had two.
