Playing 40 Minutes Doesn’t Cut It In Latest Binghamton Senators Set Back
Despite the Binghamton Senators peppering Hartford Wolf Pack’s goaltender Yann Danis with 40 shots, in the end it was the lack of putting together a full 60 minutes that sealed their fate as the Senators went down in defeat by a score of 4-3 in front of a nearly sold out Arena.
GAME RECAP
Senators draw first blood with forward Cole Schneider scoring his 20th of the season as he takes a Carter Camper pass and rifles the puck in from the left side of the cage for a 1-0 lead. Hartford’s Chris Mueller ties it up shortly after with his one time slapper beating Scott Greenham short side after being set up by forward Chris Bourque.

Binghamton marches right back answering with Shane Prince‘s re-direct off of a floater sent to the net by Patrick Mullen that eludes Danis making it a 2-1 game. As Darren Kramer tries to start something with Dylan McIlrath near the Wolf Pack’s bench, defenseman Conor Allen slips the puck to Ryan Haggerty in the slot and chips it in past Greenham’s right shoulder to again tie it up at two apiece.
Then into the second Haggerty gets his second of the night while burning defenseman Troy Rutkowski in the dust as he motors towards the net and flips it high far side into the mesh giving Hartford their first lead of the night 3-2.
Hartford’s Ryan Bourque skates into the zone full speed and Mullen attempts to stop him with a hip check but instead gets bumped off sending him sailing in the air spinning towards the corner, as he is shaken up and that would end his night. At the same time, Brad Mills and Chris Summers gets testy with one another and drop the gloves with Mills getting the upper hand in the fracas.
Then Ryan Dzingel takes advantage of a goal mouth melee in the blue paint and pokes a loose puck by Danis to even it up once again. With 14:06 left in the second, the Wolf Pack would take the lead and this time for good as Oscar Lindberg lets go a shot from the wall that fools Greenham as it slips by him into the back of the cage. Unfortunate one for Greenham as he should have come up making the save as they now have a 4-3 lead.
In the final period Binghamton just didn’t have the will or determination to do any damage despite the big home crowd encouraging them on. It would come to an end when Buddy Robinson takes a terrible penalty with under two minutes left that seals the Wolf Pack’s win on the road. Shots ended up in favor of the Senators 40-27.
NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
- Robinson with a really bad game as blind passes and stone hands played a factor but on the receiving end of a penalty with under two minutes left was what broke the camel’s back.
- Dzingel with a strong game as he can fly with the puck as he scores his 15th in a goal mouth scramble.
- Mullen looks to be out some time as he was rattled up pretty good on that hit in the second, getting his bell rung while slowly being helped off the ice. It happened to be the same area in a previous shift he landed feet first hard into the boards.
- Greenham most likely would want the game winner back as the puck harmlessly slipped by him on a difficult angle, however he should have come up with it.
- Senators don’t put a full 60 minutes into it as they played well for the first 40 before being flat in the last 20 with many stoppages and nothing creatively occurring for the offense.
- Binghamton 0 for 3 on the power play as the league’s top rated has fallen some going 0 for 8 in the last two contests.
- Senators wore their annual St. Patrick’s Day green jerseys for the second straight game as they were auctioned off afterwards.
- Defenseman Aaron Johnson served his second of his two game suspension as Rutkowski was again inserted in his place in the line up being paired up with Fredrik Claesson. Derek Grant was a scratch (day to day) with D-Man Danny New pitching in on the offense.
