Canada’s Hockey Dominance, Lebreton Flats Talk, Ottawa Senators Off-Season Plans

facebooktwitterreddit

Here’s another edition of Senshot’s “Around The Web“, a series where we discuss the Ottawa Senators and more every once in a while. It’s a piece that runs on Sunday’s and Wednesday’s as we try to tell the Senators’ weekly story as well as noted from around the NHL, while discussing other great works around the web.

AROUND THE WEB:

The Players Tribune, “The Beautiful Game” – Igor Larionov

Submission: Josh Chenoweth

Not a Sens article, but regardless, Igor Larionov’s recent reflection on plaing in Russia and of the 1980 Winter Olympics is a stellar read and really opens your eyes about how we develop and nurture talent in Canada with regards to the NHL.

I’d encourage everyone to read this and then follow it up by reading an article from last year on Sportsnet about why Canada isn’t even more dominant on the world stage when it comes to hockey.

"follow up read: Sportsnet “Why isn’t Canada more dominant in Hockey?”"

The Hockey Writers, “Mark Stone‘s Hockey IQ Is Off The Charts” – Callum Fraser

Note: I left this one in from last week, it’s a solid piece and I definitely recommend the read.

Callum Fraser’s piece on Mark Stone is one that takes a look at Mark Stone, as his “Hockey IQ Is Off the Charts” Callum looks at fenwick and corsi production as well as takeaways, which have proven to be a strong part of Mark Stone’s game this year.

I think Callum ends this piece nicely, as he discusses Mark Stone’s contract situation. ” Time for the Senators to lock up one of the smartest players in the league long term.”

SensChirp “ChirpEd – 2015 Off Season Plan” – SensChirp Reader, Dennis

Submission: Trevor Shackles

SensChirp gets a guest reader Dennis to give his thoughts on what the offseason plan for Ottawa should be. It’s no surprise that getting a top 4 defenseman is on the list.

If the team fails to address this obvious problem in the summer, then it’ll be hard to put faith in them moving forward.

"Cover Photo Note: When discussing the Senators’ off-season plans it’s important to look at Patrick Wiercioch‘s future. As a player who has held such high promise and may have fallen out of favour in the Senators organization, perhaps Ottawa deals him.. maybe as soon as Monday’s NHL trade deadline."

6th Sens “Leeder Speaks: LeBreton Flats Development, Senators Bid, Etc. ” – Nichols

Submission: Eldrinson Vado

More from SenShot

Nichols of The Sixth Sens wrapped up by today’s radio bit from Ottawa Senators president, Cyril Leeder and the new information about the proposed new arena to the NCC.

Cyril talks about the current state of the Canadian Tire Center, Public Transportation to the proposed new arena and more…

Silver Seven “A Look at the Odds: Playoffs and Draft or Being Okay with Being Okay” – Richard McCrae

Submission: Zachary Prenner

This one’s a fan post from one Richard MacRae on Silver Seven Sens. In it he does his best to ease our anxieties on how to feel about the Sens come the end of this season: be it low Draft spot, middling non playoff spot or (however unlikely) actually making the playoffs.

That’s the nice thing about this Sens squad – we’ve got multiple reasons to feel OK about each of these scenarios. In about perfect world I’d like a high Draft spot, and maybe an extra first rounder scrounged from assorted assets, but I know at this point it’s more likely we end up around the 12-16 pick (which historically we haven’t done too poorly with) and I’m fine with that. I feel confident about the direction this team – a very young team – is heading and I think the future is bright no matter where we finish this year.
