Mark Stone Is Good At Hockey, Tanking Thoughts, Trade Deadline Talk

Here’s our writer’s favourite pieces from around the web in a Sunday edition of the post.

This time is all over the place, there’s a really nice piece on Mark Stone, some controversial thoughts from one of Hockey’s biggest bloggers, and some neat little tid-bits here and there.

AROUND THE WEB:

Sportsnet, “Why Tanking in the NHL rules” – Steve Dangle

Submission: Josh Chenoweth

Steve Dangle discusses why tanking is actually a good way to rebuild a team, even if not always a guarantee, and why fans can be completely for it when their team is out of the playoff picture.

While the Senators have some good young players, especially Stone and Hoffman this season, I think we can all agree the team lacks elite talent in its pipeline. And while the playoffs are still technically possible, winning at this point in the year is more likely to hurt the Sens than it is to help them.

The Hockey Writers, “Mark Stone’s Hockey IQ Is Off The Charts” – Callum Fraser

Callum Fraser’s piece on Mark Stone is one that takes a look at Mark Stone, as his “Hockey IQ Is Off the Charts” Callum looks at fenwick and corsi production as well as takeaways, which have proven to be a strong part of Mark Stone’s game this year.

I think Callum ends this piece nicely, as he discusses Mark Stone’s contract situation. ” Time for the Senators to lock up one of the smartest players in the league long term.”

Ottawa Sun “Senators at Trade Deadline: Talk, but no action?” – Bruce Garrioch

Submission: Trevor Shackles

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports that Bryan Murray may be inactive at the trade deadline, instead waiting until the summer.
If no veteran assets are moved, I think that’s a major mistake. Some players could net a few draft picks, and this is the perfect year to get plenty of those.

Grantland “Did They Play The Game?” – Sean McIndoe (@DownGoesBrown)

Silver Seven “5 Thoughts For Friday” – Sheer Craziness

Submission: Trevor Shackles

Sheer Craziness at Silver Seven Sens gives us another rendition of Five Thoughts for the week. Amongst them is his opinion on the current goaltending situation, stating that he’s glad the duo right now is Hammond and Driedger.

I have to agree with him, because with Anderson and Lehner out, it would be a knee jerk reaction to trade actual assets for a goalie that would be here for only a few months. Furthermore, having these goalies up here right now should help the Senators to get a higher draft pick.
