Colin Greening On Waivers, Shuffling Lines, Notes On The Ottawa Senators

Colin Greening has been placed on waivers. The news isn’t really news, as Bryan Murray had publicly stated that Greening would likely be on waivers after the all-star break.

Greening carries a salary of just over $2.5m and in being a healthy scratch, you knew Greening’s play wasn’t going to cut it.

The move is one that Murray sees as giving Colin a chance to play. He’s not going to see time in Ottawa, so going down to Binghamton and getting some time in could be the best for Mr. Greening.

And that is the likely scenario, as with the cap as tight as it is, it is unlikely someone gives Greening a chance and takes on a 3-year deal with an AAV of 2.65 million.

Greening is in just the first year of his contract extension signed in the summer of 2013. The extension came after a good playoff performance, good shortened season and solid 11-12 campaign for Greening.

In hind-sight it’s no question that Murray is upset with the deal, but considering the player we all thought Greening would be; the deal seemed fair initially.

As a 6′ 3″, 200+ lbs forward with some scoring ability, the value was there for a player like Greening. Perhaps it was too soon to give Greening the money, but let’s say he has a good 13-14 year and heads to Free Agency. The big forward is certainly coveted in today’s game, and Bryan Murray buying some UFA years seemed like a good idea at the time.

Shuffling Lines

Some interesting lines from practice today. With the top 9 being as follows.

Michalek – Turris – Stone

MacArthur – Zibanejad – Ryan

Hoffman – Pageau – Lazar

MacArthur and Turris aren’t a duo that have been broken up too often. They’ve been intact since Cameron took over and really all season. I like the move, I think we see here a maximized potential for Ottawa’s top 9 at this point in time.

Believe it or not, Milan Michalek has been Ottawa’s hottest player of late (3G, 3A in 6GP) and slotting him with Kyle Turris makes a ton of sense. Mark Stone has been good as well, and as Kyle Turris has struggled if anyone is to get him going, it is those two.

The Hoffman – Pageau – Lazar line possesses a ton of potential. Hoffman has been Ottawa’s best scoring forward this year and can do almost anything on his own. Pageau has been a scrappy, yet solid and responsible forward. It’s Lazar who hasn’t had the success he has wanted and is given the best chance on this line.

A solid Top 9, and MacArthur with Zibanejad and Ryan also seems like an ideal pairing.
