Tough Break In 3-2 OT Loss For Binghamton Senators

The Binghamton Senators lost in overtime 3-2 to the Hershey Bears but managed to secure a point in a traditionally tough place to earn one down in Chocolate Town. Peter Mannino played well saving 33 shots but he must’ve wished to have that game winner back that was the difference maker in the extra period.

GAME RECAP

Bears’ Liam O’Brien and Darren Kramer have a date set a side 32 seconds in the first right after the faceoff and tussle around a few. Hershey good jump early as Mannino saves a shot close in by Dustin Gazley and a glove save on Dane Byers. Max McCormick blocks a shot and skates off in pain. Soon after, Buddy Robinson scores his seventh of the season on a defensive Bears turnover by Steve Oleksy as he dekes it by starter Philipp Grubauer for a 1-0 lead.

More from Belleville Senators

Senators then get a break as referee Terry Koharski blows a quick whistle on a save by Mannino, but the puck continued into the back by the corner of the net but is ruled no goal much to the delight of the home fans in voicing their displeasure. Philippe Cornet cross-checks Aaron Johnson in front of the net as the Senators get a late power play that will continue into the second. Shots are 14-9 Bears.

No luck on the PP but L. O’Brien is leveled by Guillaume Lepine on an open ice hit as the second frame is underway. Mannino flashes the glove on a breakaway by Cornet protecting the one goal lead. But the Bears get on the board with shot from Chris Conner as the puck trickles in to tie it up. Jim O’Brien gives the Bears a 2-1 lead scoring against his former team on the power play with some sweet tic tac toe passing. 37 seconds later Carter Camper answers back scoring his fifth top shelf to tie it up once again.

Derek Grant and Robinson skate to a shorthanded rush but Grubauer stops Robinson’s backhander. Mannino keeping his team in it stopping several scoring opportunities. Senators go on the power play with 3:43 left, but it’s negated by Chris Wideman’s tripping call 1:02 in. Nothing comes from it as both teams head to overtime.

In the extra period, the Bears’ Connor Carrick gets credited with the winning goal as his shot is kicked out by Mannino but caroms off of Fredrik Claesson’s stick into the back of the net. 3-2 Bears are winners as they outshoot the Senators 36-27.

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS

  • In the second Patrick Mullen gets hit by Kris Newbury knocking the wind out of him as he remained on the ice for some time. Then Robinson would soon go after Newbury in a short fight with Buddy slamming him to the ice.
  • Mullen didn’t return for the third period. McCormick continued playing after his first period block shot.
  • David Dziurzynski and Erik Burgdoerfer mixed it up in the second with Dizzy landing some lefts.
  • Tough break for Mannino in the game winner with the puck glancing in off the stick of Claesson after making the initial save.
  • Shane Prince nice heads up play feeding Camper for the Senators second goal.
  • Binghamton’s power play 0/2 but killed off 4/5 Bears opportunities.
  • JOB scored his second for Hershey and has a point in all six games he’s played in for the Bears.
