Offense Explodes In Binghamton Senators 7-0 Rout Over Albany

If there is a turning point to this season, we can all look back and remember when Randy Lee and Pierre Dorion spent the weekend in Binghamton, as this team played their best hockey yet in winning back to back games for the first time this season, and on home ice.

Andrew Hammond earned his second professional shutout leading the Binghamton Senators to their second consecutive victory as the offense blew up with a season high seven goals in the Albany Devils drubbing. 13 different Senators end up on the score-sheet as the club is beginning to turn the tide and string some wins.

GAME RECAP

Binghamton’s early play is sluggish in the opening period and Hammond is tested often as the defense have several turnovers which lead to seven shots on net compared to zero for the Senators. Hammond steady’s the ship as the momentum is starting to shift the Senators way as Garrett Thompson’s wraparound is through the crease where Shane Prince awaits and his shot slides under Scott Wedgewood, oh so close. Soon after Jean-Gabriel Pageau just misses the net and the puck pinball’s through a maze of players in between the hash marks.

Leave it to Derek Grant as he gets his team off and running with a shot from the high slot handcuffing Wedgewood for his fourth of the season. Then Thompson gives Binghamton a two goal lead with a redirect in front of Wedgewood from a slapper off the stick of defenseman Aaron Johnson as the Senators finish strong after a slow start in the first.

Patrick Mullen scores a nifty goal from a sharp angle on the powerplay as he pops the water bottle from the side of the net giving the Senators a 3-0 lead. Wideman’s shot started it as Mullen picked up the rebound with the secondary assist going to Pageau. Then Wideman scores his 10th of the season by simply unloading a slapper along the side boards that gets a part of Wedgewood’s shoulder and finds the upper part of the net and the rout is on, 4-0 Senators.

Carter Camper gets on board scoring his second of the season with a really nice give and go pass from across ice with Prince pulling Wedgewood out of position with the return for the easy put in. Shots are 24-19 Senators after two as this stat itself is a rarity, but earned with the team pressing on and not letting go.

Albany netminder Keith Kinkaid is in relief for Wedgewood to open up the third, but it wouldn’t matter much with just under three minutes in Derek scores his second of the evening, banging home a pass from Matt Puempel to up the lead to 6-0. Hammond snags a one timer from Tim Sestito with his glove for his best save of the game. To close it out, Buddy Robinson picks Corbin McPherson’s pocket from behind the net and dishes to Pageau in front for the seventh goal as the rest plays out with the team preserving Hammond’s shutout.

NOTES & OBSERVATIONS

• Hammond ended up with 31 saves as he was tested early but not so much quality wise. However, he had an impressive weekend overall and earned First Star honors for his effort’s in tonight’s win.
• Ryan Dzingel didn’t register a point but appeared hurt in stopping a Devils shot to the leg and was slow in recovering in the second period.
• Albany had all sorts of problems tonight with not only goaltending, but their D looked pretty broken. Perhaps an off night and in the middle of three in three will do it. They also missed their top scorer in Paul Thompson, serving his second of a two game suspension.
• Senators finished killing all five powerplays for the Devils and were 1/2 on their own. Good numbers as the special teams continue to impress.
• Fans got the Wave going in the third and also celebrated with a McDonald’s biscuit for the first time in eight home games rewarded to the fans if the Senators score five goals.
• Both Lee and Dorion spent the afternoon in Binghamton watching the Ottawa/Blues game at the Arena on the video boards as the game was broadcasted to accommodate their requests.
• It was the annual season ticket holder party with a meet and greet with the players after the game as the club took a win with them for a change as they are normally are on the losing end of the cause. All smiles across the board in this year’s event.
